Exports of woodchips in Green Tonnes

SEFE last year exported over 1 million green tonnes of woodchips from Eden. Most of this goes to the parent company in Japan. A long term supply contract with the New South Wales Government guarantees 329,400 tonnes a year from the Eden Region and 80,000 from the Southern Region.

From Victoria, a long term contract exists with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to supply 200,000 tonnes a year until 2012. However, since the Regional Forest Agreements, no export license is now required, and Victorian forests are supplying an increasing proportion of the chipmill's inputs.

An average of 160 trucks a day enter the chipmilll with loads of either woodchips or logs.
This is based on a regular truck monitoring surveys undertaken by Chipstop, the most recent in December 2006.  This equates to an en estimated 14.5 million truck kilometres every year.

Royalty payments are payments made to the State Government for logs. In NSW, typical royalties for pulplogs are:
South Coast Region: $8.00 per tonne
South East Region: $18.00 per tonne
Over ninety per cent of timber felled in the Eden Region is either woodchipped or wasted. Just 2 percent ends up as sawn timber.

The average pulplog royalty for both regions in 2004 was $14.26. For 2005 it was $12.85 per tonne.

Political donations: South East Fibre Exports apparently does not make donations to any political party. However, the Forest Products Association has made periodic payments.
Significantly, the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Engineering Union (CFMEU), th loggers' union is among the biggest donors to the Labor Party. In 2004, it gave $670,000 to the ALP.

The koala in the Eden Region is on the brink of regional extinction. The Australian and NSW Governments do not recognise this, but the US Government does. In May 2000, the US Government declared the koala as threatened across its entire range under the US Endangered Species Act as threatened. The listing was based on nine years intensive research and scientific submissions to the US Government by the "Australians for Animals" group. In his submission to the US Government, Dr Frank Carrick, University of Queensland referred to the koala as "almost extinct" in the southern half of NSW. "Even these survivors continue to be threatened by intensive forestry operations such as clearfelling of the Southern NSW forests for woodchip exports," he said.

Area logged. In 2006, a total of 9,045 hectares was logged in the south coast and Eden regions combined (source: ForestsNSW). Every logtruck represents half a hectare of forest logged (on the basis of figures in the Eden EIS (Vol C, Appendix 4-9), 59 826 ha =2726 984 tonnes.  On the same basis, each fully laden woodchip carrier, such as the Daishowa Maru, for example represents 1176.5 hectares of logged forest.
