WOODCHIPPING AND THE
RECESSION
Every day the woodchipping industry is shut down saves up to
3,000 trees and the wildlife that those trees support.
The global downturn is hitting the paper/woodchip industry very
hard. At Easter 2009, the chipmill announced it would close for
almost 3 weeks, longer than the national shutdown of 10 days.

NIPPON PAPER
PURCHASE OF AUSTRALIAN PAPER MILLS On February 16
2009 the owner of the Eden chipmill, Nippon Paper Group Inc said
it would pay $A600 million for Australian Paper (PaperlinX) and
up to A$100 million more based on performance over three years
to June 2012.
PaperlinX has paper mills in Maryvale (Victoria) and Shoalhaven
(NSW). This could have far reaching implications for the SE
Australian woodchipping industry.
The
Victorian bushfires
are an
immense tragedy for people, wildlife, domestic animals and the bush.
They have also been used to undermine the truth. Logging activists
and conservative politicians have blamed "greenies" for the
fires. Consider these facts

PETER GARRETT IN
BED WITH WOODCHIPPERS World's best practice sellout, Peter Garrett comes face to face with a
live art installation depicting himself in bed with a logger on an
electioneering visit to Bega on 2 August 2007. Unfair? Well, on the

CHIPMILL BLOCKADE APRIL 2007
Focus on Global Warming We blockaded the chipmill at Eden for over 11 hours to
highlight the woodchipping industry as a generator of
greenhouse gasses. During the blockade, Mr Peter Rutherford, Forestry Manager of SEFE
unsuccessfully attempted to invoke a 2005 Supreme Court injunction
against a group of 8 Wandella forest activists which sought to
prevent them from blockading the logging company, Bruce Mathie and
Sons. Mr Rutherford arrived at the blockade site with a Mathie log
truck under police escort, and driven by Mr Quentin Mathie. The
truck and driver remained present while Mr Rutherford read out the
injunction. With climate change upon us, we need these forests more than ever.
It is no longer just a regional or even a national issue. It is a
world wide concern.

YELLOW BELLIED
GLIDER KILLED IN LOGGING This is a dead Yellow Bellied Glider found smashed to death under
branches of tree logged by Forests NSW in early July in Bago State
Forest. These beautiful, harmless creatures are actually listed as
Endangered under the NSW Threatened Species Act and Forests NSW are
supposed to take measures to protect these animals. We should
remember, though, that early ecological research on the impacts of
woodchipping involved asking the loggers to count the dead bodies of
animals like these at the end of the day's work.
