PETER GARRETT IN BED WITH WOODCHIPPERS
World's best practice sellout, Peter Garrett comes face to face with a live art installation depicting himself in bed with a logger on an electioneering visit to Bega on 2 August 2007. Unfair? Well, on the same night, he had dinner with Eden woodchip mill General Manager, Peter Mitchell and Corporate Affairs Manager, Vince Phillips.

FINANCIAL ANALYSIS OF WOODCHIPPING INDUSTRY REVEALS HUGE SUBSIDIES
A new financial analysis of the woodchipping industry exposes huge NSW taxpayer subsidies. Terry Digwood's new submission to the NSW Treasury on pulpwood royalties reveals figures that the official documents don't want you to know. Click

GULAGA LOGGING  Gulaga Mountain needs your help now. It is a special place with important meaning for the Aboriginal community. Its beautiful spotted gum forests are home to numerous threatened species.  Logging of Compartment 3046 of Bodalla Forest (Gulaga Mountain) started on  14 May.  How to help the campaign

CHIPMILL BLOCKADE APRIL 2007 Focus on Global Warming
We blockaded the  chipmill at Eden  for over 11 hours to highlight the  woodchipping industry as a generator of greenhouse gasses.
During the blockade, Mr Peter Rutherford, Forestry Manager of SEFE unsuccessfully attempted to invoke a 2005 Supreme Court injunction against a group of 8 Wandella forest activists which sought to prevent them from blockading the logging company, Bruce Mathie and Sons. Mr Rutherford arrived at the blockade site with a Mathie log truck under police escort, and driven by Mr Quentin Mathie.  The truck and driver remained present while Mr Rutherford read out the injunction.
With climate change upon us, we need these forests more than ever. It is no longer just a regional or even a national issue. It is a world wide concern.

YELLOW BELLIED GLIDER KILLED IN LOGGING
This is a dead Yellow Bellied Glider found smashed to death under branches of tree logged by Forests NSW in early July in Bago State Forest. These beautiful, harmless creatures are actually listed as Endangered under the NSW Threatened Species Act and Forests NSW are supposed to take measures to protect these animals. We should remember, though, that early ecological research on the impacts of woodchipping involved asking the loggers to count the dead bodies of animals like these at the end of the day's work.

CHIPMILL BLOCKADE 5 JULY 2006
Treesitter at Edrom Road blockade on July 5. Her efforts helped to stop traffic into the chipmill for 6 hours. She was arrested for her efforts.

WELCOME TO PETER MITCHELL, new General Manager of South East Fibre Exports.
Mr Mitchell is well known to conservationists as a "hands-on" manager. He has turned up with his chainsaw on a number of occasions at blockades and other actions at the chipmill and in the forest. On one occasion he distinguished himself by cutting the legs off a trip-pod with his chainsaw while it was still upright.
We are pleased to see that SEFE has recruited the new boss from within its own ranks and that it has chosen somebody who will at least be entertaining.
Does anyone have a photo of Peter Mitchell?

EDEN CHIPMILL MASS RALLY 2 JULY

The chipmill rally on 2 July was a great success, with 600 - 700 people braving cold winter weather, many of them travelling great distances to tell governments and corporations that they will not put up with native forest woodchipping. Check here for more details. See some good photos from the rally.

CHIPMILL CONVEYOR BELT LOCK-ON

For more than a full work shift on 10 June 2005 all woodchipping stopped at the Eden mill when 10 people, with support from an outside crew entered the mill and attached
to the conveyor belt  which moves chips from the chipper to the stockpile.
The only work done was some minor maintenance, although the canteen was very busy selling cups of coffee, especially to the police.
This is the first time that conservationists have succeeded in entering the mill since the new security fence has been in place. In January 2006 conservationists again entered the mill and stopped work by locking on to truck unloaders.

WOODCHIPPERS BREAK TRUCK RECORD

Our 2004 chipmill vigil reported record high truck numbers, on average 163 per day. The previous average was 130.
Previous highest recorded tally for a single day during a woodchip vigil was 146. A vigil in December 2005 again recorded 160 trucks.
These survey results are devastating and our worst ever result.

• a higher proportion (79%) of log loads contained old growth trees

• a smaller proportion (less than 10 %) were offcuts from sawmills.

Both of these findings are in direct conflict with industry and Government claims.

• high numbers of split logs on trucks. Company spokesmen often state that the mill no longer needs to split logs. They cite this as “evidence” that they no longer use large old trees.
This is simply not true. Evidence gathered during the survey shows that the chipmill still uses a high proportion of enormous logs, but they are now split before trucking, not at the mill.
This is a con intended to fool the public and save the chipmill money.
