EDEN CHIPMILLSECURITY
How to get there and other useful facts...... As the map shows, the main way into the chipmill is along Edrom Road. Turn off the Princes Highway about 18 kilometres south of Eden town. The chipmill is 17 kms along Edrom Road.

Contact us for advice on the best route and up to date security information.

In June 2002, the chipmill became heavily fortified so give serious thought to how you approach it.

Don't risk an arrest or being beaten up for nothing!
By sea, select any of the small coves to the east of the wharf for your landing. The headland is steep.

For details of the electric fencing system, check the Gallagher Power Fencing website at: http://www.security.gallagher.com.au/
In 2005, they added a substantial concrete footing under the fence, presumably to discourage wombats from digging under it.
Be careful. If you enter chipmill grounds without permission you may be breaking the law and may be prosecuted or removed with "reasonable force." South East Fibre Exports employs a security officer called Col ("The Angry Ant") Clarke, who is not averse to a bit of biffo. He and his colleagues carry big sticks and are keen to use them. Any use of force greater than "reasonable" could make the company and its employees liable to charges of assault.
And if you're female, be prepared to cop some of the most vile sexist language you will hear in your life.

Woodchip carriers visit Eden on average about twice per month, berthing at the chipmill wharf. Loading takes approximately 2.5 days.

Shipping information is available from the Eden Harbourmaster on 02 64961719 or contact us. Chipmill public tours were cancelled in July 2002, so there is now no easy, legal way to see inside. Watch this space. We will advise if/when tours resume.
Offices and boardroom are approximately 100 metres in from the gatehouse on the left hand side, beyond a small car park. Mobile phone coverage along Edrom Road is patchy, but excellent inside the chipmill itself.

Select the text of our suggested message and paste it into your e-mail message box
"This message is on behalf of the native forests of south eastern Australia. It is also to support your company's policy of moving away from native forests as a source of fibre for paper manufacture. I believe that the best way to show that you are serious about moving away from native forests is to close down the SEFE woodchip mill at Eden. Australia has enough plantation hardwood available to substitute for all the native forest woodchips produced at Eden and your company could be showing leadership in the paper industry by using plantation chips."

Send a letter in English or Japanese to Nippon Paper.

Timber Communities Australia
The well resourced Timber Communities Australia is the loggers' lobby. It is largely bankrolled by the woodchipping industry. It showed some rare good sense a few years ago when it changed its name from the Forest Protection Society, but has shown very little since.

Why would anyone want to visit its website? Well, you can get details of up coming events such as TCA conferences and you can find out what they are saying about us.

National Association of Forest Industries (NAFI)
NAFI is the industry body that speaks on behalf of the woodchipping industry. Its website features a "Timbertalk" page in which you can submit questions to "Hardwood Harry" and "Softwood Sal", who claim to "love forests and wood products, [and] work with timber and support sustainable timber industries."
They'd love to hear from you, so drop them a line and say "G'day". Harry and Sal will answer your questions for you. The most recent questions are posted on the site. Most (but not all) questions put to them are quite tame and bland. If you think that Harry and Sal could be answering a few more challenging questions, pay them a visit at:
http://www.nafi.com.au/timbertalk/
Suggested questions:
How much money did NAFI donate to the Rev Fred Nile for his last election campaign?
What made NAFI think that Rev Fred Nile was interested in forests? Has he delivered the goods? How many animals and birds die to produce a tonne of woodchips?

INDUSTRY INFORMATION
Get the latest industry news from either

PaperLoop.com

http://www.paperloop.com
or Forestweb

http://www.forestweb.com
Each is highly recommended for up to date and accurate (allowing for their particular perspective) industry information. Essential for corporate campaigners. Both have a search facility, so just key in your favourite corporate villain.
Another handy site is the Australian National University School of Forestry at
http://www.anu.edu.au/Forestry/info/marketreport
This site has useful studies on woodchip and pulplog pricing, the cost of hauling logs and other interesting matters.
